Ross Tierney hoping to kick on after Morecambe success

22 February 2024

Walsall midfielder Ross Tierney is hoping to kick on after scoring his first league goal for Walsall on what was his first start since early December.

The 22-year-old recently returned from injury and after a handful of substitute appearances, he was given a starting spot against Morecambe and took just 13 minutes to get on the scoresheet and set the Saddlers on their way to a 3-0 victory.

Tierney was pleased to work his way back into the starting XI and is now keen to add more goals and assists in the final run-in in Sky Bet League Two.

“I’ve felt like I’ve been playing well, trying to get goals and assists,” Tierney said.

“I was having a bit of banter with Jez (Jack Earing) and Manny (Adegboyega) that they’ve scored more goals in the league but thankfully on Tuesday I was level with Manny for about 45 minutes and then he scored another one which I’m sure we’ll have a bit of banter about.

“It’s my first start since Notts County away so it’s been a long road but it’s been enjoyable, I felt good coming into it.

"I spoke to Jez, he’s been playing ahead of me and he gave me a few tips before the game. Hopefully I can kick on now.”

Mat Sadler’s side have recorded back-to-back wins, both at home, and now sit just three points behind seventh place Harrogate Town, who the Saddlers travel to on Saturday.

Tierney is hoping the players can carry their strong home form into this weekend’s match.

“It’s been two good home performances,” Tierney commented.

“Our home performances have been doing us the world of good but the first thing we said after full time (on Tuesday) was that we need to rest and recover.

"Hopefully we can get another win on Saturday.”
