Match Report: Walsall 3-0 Morecambe

20 February 2024

Jamille Matt and Emmanuel Adegoboyega both scored in back-to-back games as Walsall secured a comfortable victory over Morecambe.

Ross Tierney opened the scoring before Matt hooked in a second as the Saddlers found themselves two to the good at half time despite the visitors dominating the first half possession.

Adegboyega continued his dream start to his Saddlers career by scoring again to put daylight between the two teams.

Mat Sadler made two changes to the team that started the victory over Mansfield Town.

Adegboyega made his first start for the Saddlers in place of the injured Priestley Farquharson while Tierney replaced Jack Earing.

Morecambe started brightly and dominated the opening 10 minutes but didn’t test Jackson Smith.

It was the Saddlers who had the first meaningful shot on goal when Isaac Hutchinson stung the palms of Archie Mair who tipped over his powerful strike.

From the resulting corner, Hutchinson collected the ball and his attempt was blocked but Tierney was there to pounce on the ricochet and rifle the ball into the back of the net.

The Shrimps continued to enjoy a lot of the possession but were being left frustrated by a resolute Saddlers rearguard.

Morecambe were certainly living to regret not making the most of their early territory as the home side doubled their advantage when Josh Gordon did brilliantly down the right hand side to get to the by-line and deliver a cross to Matt who hooked the ball home on 26 minutes.

Both sides enjoyed spells of possession for the remainder of the half but it was the Saddlers who went into the break with the advantage.

The visitors enjoyed possession again in the early running of the second period but again, the Saddlers stood firm and frustrated them.

Sadler turned to his bench just after the hour marked as he swapped Tierney and Brandon Comley for Earing and Ryan Stirk.

Walsall added a third on 65 minutes when Matt’s poked shot came off the post and Adegboyega followed in the striker’s footsteps by scoring in back to back matches.

The Saddlers professionally saw out the remaining minutes of the game to make it back to back wins!
