Match Report: Walsall 2-1 Accrington Stanley

27 February 2024

Walsall came from behind against Accrington Stanley to make it four successive victories and climb into the play-off places.

After a goalless first half, Jack Nolan opened the scoring from the penalty spot but the Saddlers responded just four minutes later as David Okagbue powered in his first Walsall goal to equalise.

The Saddlers pushed hard for a winner and it came with five minutes of normal to go when Emmanuel Adegboyega netted his third in four matches to win it for the hosts.

Mat Sadler made one change to the team that started the 2-0 victory over Harrogate Town as Jack Earing replaced Ross Tierney who dropped to the bench.

The Saddlers started brightly and had a couple of decent chances in the opening 20 minutes. Jamille Matt fired over after the ball broke to him in the box while Earing dragged a shot wide.

Walsall thought they’d opened the scoring on 33 minutes when Liam Gordon skipped to the by-line and rolled the ball across the six yard box. It took a deflection and looked like it may have crossed the line but despite strong appeals from the home side, the referee didn’t award a goal.

The Saddlers had the better of the first half and started the second half well but despite this, it was the visitors who opened the scoring on 56 minutes.

Liam Gordon was adjudged to have handled the ball and the referee pointed to the spot. Nolan stepped up and rifled the ball into the bottom corner.

Walsall weren’t behind for long though as just four minutes later, Okagbue headed in Isaac Hutchinson’s corner to break his duck and level the contest.

The hosts went in search of a second and came close when Earing’s powerful strike just sailed over the bar.

The Saddlers continued to push as Hutchinson broke down the right and sent in a cross but it just evaded substitute Mo Faal who was arriving in the six yard box.

Accrington still carried their own threat as Tommy Leigh had a go from distance but Jackson Smith watched it all the way and made a comfortable save.

It was all Walsall though in the second half and their pressure was finally rewarded when Adegboyega steered in Okagbue’s header back across goal to win the match.
