Sadler delighted to see team claim deserved victory over Swindon Town

17 April 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler felt his team got the result they deserved against Swindon Town on Tuesday night.

Danny Johnson scored a dramatic late winner as the Saddlers after Mo Faal’s opener was cancelled out by Paul Glatzel.

Sadler was delighted with the victory and thought there were a lot of standout performances but his only frustration was that his side didn’t have the game wrapped up before Swindon’s second half equaliser.

“We should have been out of sight,” Sadler said.

“I thought for 60/65 minutes until they scored, we absolutely dominated the game and it wouldn’t have flattered the game with the chances we had for it to be a four or five nil game.

“When you don’t take your chances, you leave it open for what was a very good strike from their lad and that was the frustrating thing on the night. I can’t be too displeased with the performance because I thought it was fantastic.

“We’re going for it at the end, we’ve got as many strikers on as we can, I was even thinking of putting Priestley (Farquharson) on up front at the end there but when you’ve got Jamma (Jamille Matt) being able to win that first one from the delivery and Danny’s finishing right at the death, you’ve always got a chance and it’s a hell of a finish with his right foot. He'd probably say his weaker foot but it’s a hell of a finish from him.

“I’m delighted they got what they earned, we did it in a different way with how we end up scoring the winner.

“As I’ve said, everyone is going to be called upon and the guys who came off the bench really did that and really put more effort into the game.

“Mo was back to Mo and I thought he was great, Josh (Gordon) ran himself into the ground, Taylor (Allen) was brilliant, Stirky (Ryan Stirk) in that role was fantastic and there were some real standout performances on the night but I’m delighted to get the win we all deserved. It sends everyone home happy and moves us on to the next game.”

It proved to be crucial victory as the Saddlers moved to within a point of the play-off places with two games to go.

Sadler’s men host Bradford City on Saturday, the final home league game of the campaign and the Head Coach insists his team will be prepared for the challenge and will come out fighting.

“For us it’s settle down again, get ourselves ready – another tough test against Bradford and it’s all to play for,” he commented.

“We’ve given ourselves a fighting chance and we’ll come out swinging as you saw at the end there, we’ve thrown on as many attacking players as we can.

“It’s great to see Tom (Knowles) back and we’ve given it a right good go and we’ll continue to do that.”
