Match Report: Walsall 2-1 Salford City

1 April 2024

Mo Faal scored a dramatic stoppage time winner to earn Walsall a vital three points against Salford City at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Jamille Matt opened the scoring after nine minutes but The Ammies levelled on the hour mark through Matthew Lund.

The game looked to be heading to a draw but in the 92nd minute, Faal kept his cool to fire in a vital goal, his third for the Saddlers.

Mat Sadler made three changes to the team that suffered a heavy defeat against MK Dons on Good Friday.

Matt, Joe Foulkes and Ross Tierney all came into the team while Donervon Daniels, Ryan Stirk and Faal all dropped out.

The Saddlers made the perfect start and opened the scoring after just nine minutes when Matt headed in Isaac Hutchinson’s corner from close range.

Salford responded well to going behind and should have equalised on 27 minutes when Matthew Lund arrived at the back post to get on the end of Connor McLennan’s dangerous ball across the six-yard box but Lund fired over from point blank range.

Conor McAleny also tested Jackson Smith on the 30 minute mark but the Saddlers stopper parried his effort away.

Walsall had another chance of their own when Hutchinson, playing his 100th match for the Saddlers, whipped a ball into Josh Gordon’s path and the striker controlled it before he unleashed a powerful shot but Alex Cairns was equal to it and the Saddlers went into the half time break ahead.

The Saddlers made a change at half time as Douglas James-Taylor replaced Matt.

On 60 minutes, Salford drew level when Ryan Watson’s cross was headed in by Matthew Lund at the back post.

Sadler reacted and made a double substitution, introducing Faal and Stirk in place of J. Gordon and Tierney.

As the game wore on, while the Saddlers enjoyed a decent amount of possession, Salford looked the more likely as both substitute Matt Smith and McAleny both found the target with but J. Smith denied them both.

Both teams were pushing for a winner but in added time, it was the hosts who got the late goal when Emmanuel Adegobyega found Faal who skipped past his man and squeezed the ball under Cairns and into the back of the net and the Saddlers picked up a crucial victory.
