Head Coach Mat Sadler looks ahead to Doncaster Rovers trip

8 April 2024

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler stressed the Saddlers must refocus quickly as they prepare to face Doncaster Rovers this evening.

Sadler’s men head to the Keepmoat Stadium on the back of Saturday’s fantastic victory away at Tranmere Rovers.

It was an impressive triumph at Prenton Park but the Saddlers boss insists the team quickly turned their attention and energy to tonight’s match against a Doncaster side who have won each of their last six matches.

“There is no time to dwell on things, we have to move forward again,” insists Sadler.

“Doncaster are on a hell of a run, they’re a good team and they got another very good win (on Saturday) so it will be a really tough game.

“We go there confident, I think the response to MK Dons is there for all to see, incredible response by us to win the next two games after that, that’s the group we have.

“We say we need to respond; we’ve done that and we’ve repeatedly done it throughout this season.

“We go into a tough game on Tuesday but we’ve given ourselves a chance to be in there fighting towards the end.”

There are just five league matches remaining of the campaign and every player in the squad will play their part.

Ryan Stirk made just his third start of 2024 on Saturday after coming back from an injury at the start of the calendar year, couple with the good competition for places in midfield.

Sadler was full of praise for the former Birmingham City midfielder for taking his opportunity coming back into the starting line-up and feels he is a good example of the professionalism that runs throughout the team.

“He’s had to wait for his chance,” Sadler admitted.

“It’s 100 per cent worthwhile mentioning Ryan and the impact he had for us in the first half of the season and you have to credit to him because he’s an incredibly fit boy, he’s played another 90 minutes there and I thought he was exceptional in the press for us and the way he controlled parts of the game in really difficult circumstances, again I talk about the wind, the ball just wasn’t coming down on a pitch that had a bit of life to it.

“It shows the professionals they are to make sure they’re ready so I was delighted for Ryan and he’s had a fantastic season and we want that to continue.”
