Pre-match: Taylor Allen feeling more confident in new role

8 September 2023

Walsall defender Taylor Allen is feeling more confident in his new role in the team.

The 23-year-old impressed playing at left centre-back last weekend and helped the Saddlers keep their first clean sheet of the 2023/24 season against Colchester United last weekend.

Allen revealed he has learned a lot over the past couple of months, with the help of fellow defender Chris Hussey and feels he is growing in the role.

“At first it was a bit of a nervous one but as pre-season went on, I learned the role and I feel a lot more comfortable now,” Allen said.

“It was nice for me to step in on Saturday and help the defence. That’s the main thing, being reliable and trustworthy for when your chance does come, you know exactly what’s wanted from you and what’s needed.

“Obviously, Chris Hussey is an experienced player and I’ve learned a lot from him from pre-season until now and it’s helped me a lot.

“Slotting in there at the weekend was down to all the work that has been done off the pitch, the meetings with the staff and watching the games closely to know what’s expected of me.”

The Saddlers travel to Salford City tomorrow and will be aiming to make it back-to-back victories.

Allen is determined to give the away support a victory to celebrate and has been impressed with the way they have got behind the team on the road so far this season.

“The fans have been great since the start of the season; they have travelled in their numbers,” he commented.

“The Morecambe game, the Crewe game, the Wrexham game and Salford this weekend so hopefully we can build on what we did (last weekend) and send them home happy.”
