Steve Guest delighted after 'special' Bescot victory

4 September 2023

Walsall Women Manager Steve Guest labelled Saturday’s opening day victory at the Poundland Bescot Stadium as a special occasion.

Aaliyah Shearer, Mia Fellows and Chloe Astell all got on the scoresheet as the Saddlers recorded an emphatic 3-0 victory over Darlaston Town (1874) Ladies.

It was a historic day as Walsall Women recorded their first ever victory at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Guest was proud after the game and felt the crowd and the noise they created made a huge difference and added to what was already a fantastic moment for the team.

“The people that stayed to watch have made the occasion,” Guest said.

“The fans backing give the girls that extra 10 per cent having their names cheered across the pitch, as Aaliyah had three or four times, same with Chloe, all her family were here so it makes it a special occasion not just for the players but for the parents and people that are connected to Walsall.”

It was the perfect start to the new league season for the girls.

Guest is keen to build on this result as the season continues but he was delighted with the result on Saturday.

“It’s a great way to start the season, a nice 3-0 win,” he commented.

“All the graft that the girls have done in the last eight or nine weeks all came together on Saturday and we got the three points.

“We’ll just keep doing what we’ve been doing, work hard in training, we’ll watch the videos, do the analysis so the players can take that on leading into the second game of the season.”

Walsall Women are next in action on Sunday 17th September when they visit Coventry City Women.
