Sadler praises players fighting spirit after first away victory of the campaign

11 September 2023

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler was delighted to give supporters an away victory to celebrate and praised the determination and never say die attitude of his players.

The Saddlers came from behind to take home all three points thanks to second half goals from Freddie Draper and Oisin McEntee.

Sadler was unhappy with the first half display and made two alterations at half time, introducing Ross Tierney and Aramide Oteh and the switch had the desired effect.

The Head Coach was pleased with how the team dug deep to fight back and earn their first win on the road. He also praised the way they gave their all to stay in the game in the first half to give themselves a fighting chance.

“The group are a joy to work with because they give absolutely everything,” Sadler said.

“The first half was frustrating for us. We had to change things but I reiterate, the fact we didn’t give in during that period, which was tough and I was desperate to get to half-time to make the changes, shows what we’re all about.

“It gave us the platform to do what we did in the second half and the supporters were with us. I’ve been desperate to give the supporters days like this, first away win in a long time, first away win for me this season, first time back-to-back for a long time and the first time this season we’ve come from behind to win a game so there were a lot of positives.”

The Saddlers were without Liam Gordon at the weekend as he was away on international duty with Guyana, who impressively won 5-1 against Antigua & Barbuda.

Tom Knowles and Chris Hussey were also missing on Saturday and Sadler explained the reasons behind their absences.

“There were personal things going on with Chris so he wasn’t here,” he confirmed.

“Tom, unfortunately, had food poisoning on Thursday evening so when you get the call about that, you’ve got to readjust.

“Liam wasn’t here as well and the team changed a lot from Thursday night to Friday morning with a few bits and pieces that had happened so credit to the group to adapt how they did, especially then when we changed it at half-time.”
