Pre-match: Draper learning every day as he aims to have a positive impact

22 September 2023

Walsall forward Freddie Draper is looking forward to Saturday’s game against AFC Wimbledon after a full week of training.

Having joined Walsall on loan this season from League One side Lincoln City, life at the Poundland Bescot Stadium has got off to a good start for Draper who already has two goals and another two assists to his name so far this term.

At the age of just 19, Draper has felt the influence of First Team Coach Darren Byfield and senior playing staff in training this week.

“It’s been great having a striker as one of the coaches to learn from and all the finishing drills I learn are great, it’s the little details I pick up along the way as well which help me,” Draper said.

“When we have those analysis sessions with him (Byfield) it’s been good because I’m learning every time and every day as well which has been good.

“I pick up loads of details from their playing styles and see what I can add to my game to see how I can improve; it’s been great and can only help me to improve as the season goes on.

“I feel like I have got more to show as well which is exciting for me and hopefully the fans can see that and keep progressing on the pitch, which I feel like I will do.”

With both sides level on points (11) coming into this game, it has the ingredients for a tense and even affair, but Draper insists with strong home form they will be difficult to beat, and the team want to put last week’s defeat right.

“Any team in this league is going to be tough to play against but we back ourselves all the way and know if we are on it, we will be very hard to beat, especially at home with the fans behind us,” Draper said.

“We want to rectify what happened against Swindon, we want to play well and get a win.

“We never really got out of our second or third gear (against Swindon) which if we do that, (on the weekend) we know we can cause them more of a challenge.”
