Match Report: Walsall 1-0 Colchester United

2 September 2023

The Saddlers continued their unbeaten start at the Poundland Bescot Stadium as a fantastic finish from Isaac Hutchinson was enough to earn all three points, as well as our first clean sheet of the season.

It was the Saddlers who started the brighter of the two sides and nearly got themselves ahead after 11 minutes when Taylor Allen, who came in for the suspended Chris Hussey, floated a brilliant diagonal ball into Jamille Matt but his diving header was well parried by United goalkeeper Owen Goodman.

Moments after the header, Matt’s strike partner for the day Freddie Draper went close. Great work from Liam Gordon on the left saw him weave his way into the 18-yard box before cutting it back to Draper four yards out but his goal-bound effort was blocked.

Five minutes later and the Saddlers went close once more as our dominance continued to show in the game. Hutchinson cut inside from the left and from just outside the penalty area, tried to curl one into the top corner but it was just wide.

The chances continued to flurry for Mat Sadler’s side and it was nearly a spectacular effort that got us in front. Oisin McEntee cushioned a header down to Draper who took it on his chest and acrobatically sent the ball towards goal but it went agonisingly wide of the mark.

But, just after the hour mark, the Saddlers did eventually break the deadlock through the lively Hutchison. Ryan Stirk hoovered the ball up inside the Colchester half and then let Hutchinson do the rest and he took aim from 25-yards out and found the top corner.

The visitors very rarely threatened Owen Evans in the Saddlers goal but with 12 minutes to go they nearly got themselves back on level terms when captain Connor Hall flicked the ball towards goal but Evans made a superb one-handed save to deny him.

Colchester continued to go in search of an equaliser and Hall nearly got it in the last minute of the game as he glanced a header towards the top corner but Evans did brilliantly to turn it over the bar.

In the end, Mat Sadler's side held on to claim an important three points.
