Aaliyah Shearer delighted to add her name in the history books

6 September 2023

Forward Aaliyah Shearer was delighted to cement her name in the history books with the first ever competitive goal at the Poundland Bescot Stadium for Walsall FC Women last Saturday against Darlaston Town (1874) Ladies.

Shearer opened the scoring for Steve Guest’s side as they made it a winning start to the 2023/24 campaign in front of a bumper crowd, making it two wins out of two on the day following the men’s 1-0 victory against Colchester United.

Shearer, who also received the Player of the Match award, was pleased with the way things panned out on the day and is hoping the team can progress further in the coming weeks.

“It was a great day overall”, she said.

“To score the first ever competitive goal at the Poundland Bescot Stadium for Walsall FC Women – it’s a feeling and a moment I will never forget. It was just what we deserved at that stage in the game and I was in the right place at the right time to follow up on the rebound and put it away – I could’ve come away with more goals in the end.

“We played here in April against Port Vale last season and lost so to begin the new season at the stadium and win in the way we did was special. We played well throughout, always looked threatening on the attack and more than deserved the three points and the clean sheet which we set out to achieve from the get-go.

“The supporters were fantastic on the day – they cheered us on, made great noise from start to finish and that support makes you want to work harder as a team and gives you that extra five/ten percent. They were a massive help to us and we as a team are thankful to everyone who stayed/came down to show their support to us.

“There’s a long way to go in the season of course but hopefully we can progress further on the back of this result and performance and achieve our goals for the season.”

Walsall FC Women are back in league action on Sunday 17th September when they visit Coventry City, kick off 2pm.
