Pre-match: Sadler expecting to face determined Newport outfit

19 October 2023

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler is expecting to come up against an experienced Newport County team who will have the bit between their teeth.

The Saddlers travel to South Wales on Friday evening, looking to earn back-to-back victories following last weekend’s 4-1 triumph over Gillingham.

The Exiles have lost their last two matches and will be determined to bounce back but Sadler has called on his side to rise to the occasion to combat their threats.

“They’ve proven this season they can go and get victories,” Sadler said.

“They’ve got some really good players, experienced players, players we’ve known in James Clarke so they’re an experienced group in the league, marshalled by an experienced management and coaching team with Graham and Joe.

“They will be desperate to put things right from their perspective on home turf and it’s up to us rise to that, understand that and I’m sure they will come out all guns blazing. It’s up to us to match that and be fully focused on what we want to do, who we are and those will be the messages I’ll be putting across.

“I expect nothing other than an extremely tough game but it's one we’re looking forward to.”

The Saddlers will be without Aramide Oteh after Sadler confirmed he will be out for a number of weeks at his press conference this week.

The picture is beginning to look a little brighter elsewhere on the injury front with the likes of David Okagbue returning to the group and Priestley Farquharson edging closer to a return.

Jack Earing, who has been out of action since early January, is also stepping up his rehabilitation and Sadler is pleased to see players return to the fold and is hoping to see them back playing in the coming weeks.

“If you fast forward another two weeks, they will all be fighting fit and will hopefully be at full tilt so it’s great to have them all around,” Sadler commented.

“It’s really good to have Jack around too, he looks in a really good place at the moment.

“We look forward to welcoming him back into full training when that does happen in the not-too-distant future. At the moment, he’s just tinkering on the edge of it but it won’t be too long before he is with us and hopefully, he’ll start affecting things in a month’s time so really positive from that point of view and it gives me a few selection headaches moving into the coming games and they’re the ones that I want.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming everybody back and the options that they will bring.”
