Match Report: Walsall 0-0 MK Dons

3 October 2023

Walsall were held to a goalless draw against MK Dons at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Owen Evans made a handful of good saves while Isaac Hutchinson and Tom Knowles came close for the Saddlers but neither side could find the breakthrough on the night.

Mat Sadler named an unchanged team for the match following Saturday’s success away at Bradford City.

Walsall had a couple of half-chances in the opening exchanges but MK Dons looked the more likely in the early running.

Ellis Harrison was denied by Evans from close range before William O’Hora arrowed in a shot from distance but his effort just whistled past the post.

The visitors continued to look dangerous and Evans was called into action again as he dived to his left to catch Harrison’s header.

Walsall grew into the game as the half went on but couldn’t create a meaningful chance despite some promising approach play.

The Saddlers did have the ball in the net on 44 minutes after Ross Tierney and Freddie Draper linked up but it was ruled out for offside.

The first real chance of the second half fell to the hosts as Isaac Hutchinson unleashed a rocket from distance that just flew wide of the mark.

MK Dons went straight down the other end and Evans once again thwarted Harrison who tried his luck with an overhead kick.

Sadler made his first change on 72 minutes as he introduced Knowles who replaced Aramide Oteh.

Knowles almost made an immediate impact as he skipped inside and arrowed in a powerful shot but it was pushed away by Craig MacGillivray.

The visitors began to enjoy possession late on and had a glorious chance in stoppage time when Jonathan Leko’s cross was somehow turned over by Mo Eisa from close range and both sides had to settle for a point.

Evans; Riley, Williams, Daniels, Gordon; Oteh (Knowles 72’), Stirk, McEntee, Hutchinson; Tierney (Matt 88’), Draper
Subs: Smith (GK),  James-Taylor, Foulkes, Johnson, Griffiths

Attendance: 4515 (245 away)
