Isaac Hutchinson describes Gillingham win as the best day of his life

17 October 2023

Midfielder Isaac Hutchinson described Saturday’s emphatic win over Gillingham at the Poundland Bescot Stadium as the best day of his life.

The 23-year-old was the star of the show in the 4-1 win over the Gills at the weekend as he scored his first professional career hat-trick as well as laying on an assist for Freddie Draper, who also notched up his fifth goal of the campaign.

And the dynamic midfielder, who has six goals to his name this season in all competitions, believes that it was exactly the performance the team needed following recent disappointment with results in League Two.

“Unbelievable. Personally – probably the best day of my life,” began Hutchinson. “As a team, after last week it was exactly what we needed so it was the perfect day.

“The first one, I didn’t really see it go in so that one was a bit of a blur but once I got the second one, it’s the first time I’ve scored more than one in a game, I thought ‘today has to be the day’ and thankfully, Ross put in an unbelievable and I got my first ever header.

“It’s a great ball, I’ve always backed myself in the air to be honest, maybe not when it’s dropping down from 100 feet but in and around the box I’ve had a couple of chances last year but I’m buzzing and I’m buzzing for the team as well because they’ve put in an unbelievable shift and I don’t get a hat-trick without the rest of them so it’s a proper team effort and unbelievable day.

“I feel confident at the moment, confident I can take those shots on and at the moment it’s clicking a bit, Tuesday night and Saturday, so I’ve got to take confidence from that, try and carry that on as a team, build a bit of consistency, back it up and we’ll be in a good place.”
