Walsall defender Liam Gordon is focused on building on what’s been a positive week so far for the team.
The Saddlers have picked up four points from difficult fixtures against Bradford City and newly-relegated Milton Keynes Dons.
Mat Sadler’s team travel to bottom club Sutton United on Saturday. Gordon insists the players are not underestimating the Amber and Chocolates and is instead determined to reproduce a similar performance to last Saturday’s against Bradford and turn a good week into a great one.
“To go away to Bradford and get three points is massive for us and with MK Dons, I believe they’ll be fighting up there in the league come the end of the season so it’s a point we’ll take that and the clean sheet but it’s important now that we build on those performances on Saturday,” Gordon said.
“If we can end the week with seven points, the group will be happy with the return all things considered.
“I don’t look at Sutton’s league position and think we’re going to roll them over because every game in this division is as difficult as the next one so we’ve just got to focus on ourselves and go there and do what we have to do to get the three points which we all want.”
The 24-year-old netted his first goal of the season away at Bradford last weekend.
Gordon particularly enjoyed the celebrations with the 427 Saddlers fans in attendance and is hoping he can have more similar moments and score what he joked was the standout goal of the campaign so far on his weaker foot.
“Goal of the season surely,” he declared.
“I come inside and my second touch was a bit heavy and I just told myself ‘I’ve got to shoot here’ so I did and I just saw it go through and ran straight over to the fans – I think I did about four celebrations in ten seconds so you could see that I’m not used to scoring but hopefully there’s many more to come and I was delighted a contribution from me helped us to get the win that day.”
