Sadler discusses EFL Trophy clash with Shrewsbury Town

13 November 2023

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler has hinted that we may see some youngster from the Academy involved in tomorrow night’s Bristol Street Motors Trophy clash with Shrewsbury Town.

The Saddlers head to the Croud Meadow for the final match of Southern Group A.

Neither side will be able to qualify for the knockout stages but Sadler sees the match as an opportunity to respond to Saturday’s defeat to Harrogate Town and give minutes to some of the younger players.

“I think that’s what we will do for the game,” Sadler hinted.

“We have to be aware where we’re at with the ones that we’re losing, the ones that have been injured (on Saturday).

“It’s an opportunity for some of the younger ones to get some minutes so I will be looking to do that.”

Sadler also has a list of injuries to contend with ahead of tomorrow’s encounter.

Ross Tierney and Jamille Matt missed Saturday’s match at the Poundland Bescot Stadium while Joe Riley was forced off in the opening 10 minutes and Sadler provided the latest on the trio.

“Joe, we’ll have to see how that goes in the next few days so no real update on him,” Sadler said.

“Jamille was concussed during the week and Ross hurt his hamstring on Tuesday so we were aware that he wouldn’t be available.

“We want to nurse some of those back, it adds to the list we’ve already got but certainly no excuses from my point of view because the lads played extremely well.

“The victory was there for us, we fell on the wrong side of it but if I look at performance and everything the lads give, we were extremely dominant but didn’t fall on the right side of it.

“We have to dust ourselves down and keep doing the right things – I’m a big believer in that and I won’t come away from that.”
