Saddlers bow out of FA Youth Cup with defeat at Lincoln City

21 November 2023

Lincoln City U18s 5-0 Walsall U18s

Walsall's FA Youth Cup journey came to an end after a lacklustre second round 5-0 defeat away to Lincoln City.

After a fairly slow start to the game, the Saddlers lepped into life and had two big chances to open the scoring.

Charlie Wragg had a volley at the back post saved by Isaac Allan in the Lincoln goal and Jackson Preece ran onto a loose ball on the edge of the box only a few moments later but the shot was tame.

Walsall carried on the early pressure with Wragg forcing a fine save from Allan with a curling effort that was destined for the top right corner.

The Imps had a chance of their own in an electric start to the first half seeing a shot go narrowly wide from Bola Okewoye after a deflection off Stan Straw.

Wragg had a third chance for The Saddlers, picking the ball up in the home side's penalty box and rounding the keeper. However, his effort was too tame and cleared easily off the line.

The Imps would take the lead half hour in as a poor back pass from Zak Poskitt left his keeper Jenson Kilroy stranded.

Lincoln's number 10 Okewoye rounded Kilroy and slotted the ball home.

The home side then doubled their lead with a wonderful piece of play resulting in Russell Berko running onto the end of a low cross.

The Imps started the second half as they ended the first. Going 3-0 up within 40 seconds of the restart after loose play and weak defending by the Walsall back line.

All hope of a cup comeback was gone as Imps midfielder Louis Nesbitt put Lincoln's fourth past Kilroy.

A chance for a fifth came for The Imps as they found themselves through on goal. A smart save down to his left from Kilroy kept the ball out the net.

With six minutes to go The Imps did find their fifth through Bailey Adamson, well and truly burying a deflated Walsall side.

The Saddlers' cup run ends with a disappointing outing at the LNER Stadium despite an exciting start to the game.
