Match Report: Chasetown U18s 2-6 Walsall U18s

9 November 2023

Charlie Wragg took Walsall through to the second round of the FA Youth Cup with four goals against Chasetown.

Wragg opened the scoring for the Saddlers 12 minutes in, following a poor pass back to the Chasetown goalkeeper. He sprinted out and tried to take it round Wragg, but the striker closed the ball down well and was able to block the pass, leading to an open goal.

James Hudson levelled the scoring on 21 minutes for the home side. A free kick deep in the Walsall half was swung in with pace and Hudson managed to get the last touch, turning it in.

Wragg got his second of the night on 39 minutes, courtesy of a through ball from Dylan Thomas. Thomas picked the ball up in his own half and drove well through the heart of the Chasetown midfield, before slotting it through to Wragg who finished at the near post.

The lead didn't last long however, as Hudson equalised again, four minutes into injury time.

The Saddlers took the lead for the third time on the night 54 minutes in through Wragg, with his third. Kilroy played a long ball and Juliff took it down expertly, had the composure to wait for Wragg's run into the box and played it into his path for the hat-trick.

Jaiy Leydon continued his goal-scoring form on 63 minutes with some close control past the right-back and smashed the ball into the roof of the net, leaving the goalkeeper helpless.

Juliff got Walsall's fifth of the game on 83 minutes. With the ball played out to him on the right wing he took a touch inside and placed it powerfully into the bottom left corner from just outside the box.

A fourth from Wragg two minutes from time rounded off a perfect evening for The Saddlers. He picked the ball up just inside the Chasetown half and, with confidence high, he ran with it, beating two defenders and the goalkeeper to confirm Walsall’s participation in the second round of the cup against Lincoln City.
