Liam Gordon outlines Guyana's aims for latest fixtures

14 November 2023

Walsall defender Liam Gordon has joined up with Guyana this week for CONCACAF Nations League matches against Bahamas and Antigua & Barbuda.

Gordon is one of three Saddlers players who will be on international this week with Donervon Daniels and Brandon Comley linking up with Montserrat.

Gordon and Guyana will be playing their final two matches in their Nations League group and the 24-year-old gave us a bit more background on how rewarding finishing top of their group could be and explained the how the competition works.

“You have a group of four teams,” Gordon stated.

“We’re in a group with Puerto Rico, Antigua & Barbuda and Bahamas. We’re in League B so the winner of our group will go to League A and play the likes of USA, Panama, Jamaica, Costa Rica – the best teams in North America and the Caribbean.

“You would also qualify for the Gold Cup, which I was involved in back in 2019. We are top of our group and we need a point to qualify although I’m not sure if I read it correctly but I don’t think there is guaranteed qualification for the Gold Cup in 2025, I think they may be adding teams from UEFA so I’m not sure if that’s our chances blown but we’re going to go with the same mindset, win these last two games and qualify for League A, make history again and keep building because we have a great squad and a young squad so we have a great future.”

With three players from the squad away on international duty, Saturday’s match against Doncaster Rovers has been postponed.

Comley and Daniels will also be playing for Montserrat and Gordon is pleased that he won’t be missing a league game this time around but stressed how proud they all are to represent their respective nations.

“It’s an honour for all of us,” he said.

“Donervon was born over there, Coms and I, our parents and grandparents are from there so it’s an honour for all of us to represent our home country and I’m very proud of them to go out there and represent.

"It will be a good experience for all of us and hopefully we all get positive results and come back ready to go when we have Forest Green.

“It was hard last time because I was the only one who went away and I did miss Salford and Gillingham when I went away and it is hard to watch but luckily the boys did get two positive results from those games but the game is off so I don’t miss anything and hopefully I come back in great form and raring to go.”
