James-Taylor pleased to get back on the scoresheet

7 November 2023

Walsall striker Douglas James-Taylor was pleased to net his first goal of the season and is now looking to kick on and continue improving.

The 21-year-old scored the equaliser in the 4-1 FA Cup triumph over Sheppey United on Friday night, his third overall in a Saddlers shirt.

James-Taylor admitted he could have scored more on the night. He is keen to improve in front of goal but was happy to be back on the scoresheet.

“On paper it’s good to get a goal,” he stated.

“I look back on that game and I had a lot of chances, obviously some good saves. I have to keep going in the game but I need to keep going in the next match and put in those chances that maybe I could have finished better or slid someone else in, that’s when things will start to progress.”

After finding the net on Friday, the striker received a congratulatory pat on the head from captain Donervon Daniels.

James-Taylor praised Daniels’ leadership qualities on a collective and personal level.

“He’s got high expectations for me, as I do for myself,” James-Taylor said.

“I’m grateful he’s pushing me on. A lot of the other players would say that about him as well.

“He’s very vocal in terms of half-time, every day in training and he leads by example. When he says something, you know he’s saying the right thing but even if he didn’t say something, the way he plays the game and his standards, you know what to do.”
