Sadler pleased with togetherness during the final three matches of 2022/23

9 May 2023

Interim Head Coach Mat Sadler has been pleased with the way everyone pulled together as a club during the final three games.

The Saddlers finished the 2022/23 season on a positive note with a 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers thanks to goals from Conor Wilkinson and Isaac Hutchinson.

Sadler picked up four points from the last three matches of the campaign. He was keen to thank Richard O’Kelly and all the staff for their assistance and was pleased with the way the team rallied together during a difficult period.

“For me, every single moment and this is the way I am as a coach and as a person, I wanted us all to be together,” Sadler said.

“I wanted us to buy in to the fact that if someone makes a mistake, if something doesn’t go quite the way we wanted it to go, the next person then takes over and looks after his teammate.

“For me, we’ve had to be a real team and we’ve been a real team. We saw how devastated we were when we conceded against Salford, the third goal, and there’s been some moments where we’ve had to throw our bodies on the line and protect clean sheets and then we’ve had to dig in, miss a chance, miss another and then score and that’s football.

“The positivity of the lads, the togetherness of the lads was everything I’d asked for so I want to single out the praise for them.

“Finally, I want to speak about Richard. He’s been fantastic for me, fantastic for us and he’s a person everyone at the football club is extremely fond of and I want to thank him for coming to help during this period.

“He’s been a fantastic soundboard for me during that time and I want to echo that to the rest of the staff because they’ve been with me and supportive of everything that we’ve been trying to do. We’ve got a fantastic team of people behind the team and they continue to be that and I want to remember those.”

A fantastic crowd over 7,176 supporters saw the final day triumph at the Poundland Bescot Stadium on Monday.

Sadler was pleased that the fans can head into the summer on the back of a victory and believes that their vociferous support is a real asset.

“When it’s like that and you get supporters in the crowd right behind the team, it’s a powerful place to play,” he commented.

“We need to create a mentality of what we are as Walsall Football Club and that togetherness throughout that I’ve tried to promote spilled into the crowd and they’ve been with us throughout it and they were fantastic again (on Monday) so I wanted to pay support to them as well.

“It was a good day, not the season we wanted, of course it hasn’t been. We want to challenge at the top of this division, that’s where we want this football club to be but we finished on a positive.

“We have to then go and reflect, take stock in the off season and be really competitive next season.”
