Long serving midfielder Liam Kinsella departs

19 May 2023

It is with a heavy heart that we confirm long-serving midfielder Liam Kinsella will leave Walsall Football Club upon the expiry of his contract on June 30th.

The 27-year-old has been at the club since he was eight years old and progressed through our Academy before going on to play 253 times in the first team.

Kinsella has served Walsall Football Club with loyalty, distinction, and pride both on and off the pitch, which contributed to him being named Player of the Season in both 2021 and 2022.

He has also done a lot of great work in the Walsall Community alongside Walsall FC Foundation, winning their Player of the Season in 2019, and dedicated a lot of his time to supporters.

Head Coach Mat Sadler admitted it was a difficult decision allow him to leave and paid tribute to the midfielder for his outstanding service.

“Liam is a fantastic person,” Sadler said.

“He has had some fantastic moments in front of the supporters here. He has been a fantastic servant for the football club and he’s a fantastic kid who I have so much admiration for.

“I’ve played with Liam so I fully know what he is on the football pitch but for me personally, I think it’s time for Liam, more than anything, to go seek a new challenge outside of this football club.

“He’s been a wonderful servant to us and I can’t speak highly enough of him as a person but I believe it is the right time for him to try something different and spread his wings outside of the football club and I’m looking forward to watching his career from a different perspective.

“It goes without saying the admiration we all share for him and it’s right that he is singled out for the fantastic servant that he has been. He will always have good will and while I’m at this football club, he’ll be welcome here anytime. It was a tough decision undoubtedly and a decision that was certainly not taken lightly.

“I take the careers of all players seriously and with respect. I just feel like it is the right time for Liam and I’m pretty sure Liam feels it’s the right time to move on to the next challenge for him.”

We would like to place on record our thanks to Liam for everything he has done for Walsall Football Club and wish him every success for the future.
