Throwback: A look at England matches played at the Poundland Bescot Stadium

16 March 2023

With the Poundland Bescot Stadium set to host England Men's Under 19s vs Hungary Men's Under 19s on Wednesday 22nd March, we take a look back on previous occasions when the national team played in WS1.

October 2016 - England Men's U21s 5-0 Bosnia & Herzegovina U21s

The Under 21s ended their European Championship qualifying campaign in some style as Tammy Abraham bagged a brace in a thumping win over Bosnia & Herzegovina at the Poundland Bescot Stadium in 2016.

Having already qualified for the tournament, the pressure was off but Aidy Boothroyd's side put on a show for the 5,263 fans in attendance.

John Swift opened the scoring after 14 minutes with a dipping shot from 25-yards.

Abraham doubled England's lead four minutes later with a fantastic acrobatic volley.

The game was put beyond doubt four minutes into the second half thanks to Josh Onomah's strike.

England began to enjoy themselves and added a fourth when Jack Grealish's delightful dinked pass was met by Duncan Watmore who coolly slotted the ball home.

Watmore was then involved in setting up Abraham for his second goal as the striker lifted the ball over the goalkeeper to round off the scoring.

England team: Walton (GK); Iorfa, Stephens, Chalobah (Chambers 45'), Galloway; Swift, Hayden, Watmore, Grealish (Redmond 74'), Onomah; Abraham (Gray 73').

Subs: Mitchell, Ward-Prowse, Baker, Holgate.

England Women 2-0 Denmark Women - May 2019

England Women's senior side warmed up for the 2019 Women's World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Denmark at the Poundland Bescot Stadium back in 2019.

8,273 supporters packed out the stadium on a sunny afternoon.

After missing a few good chances, England opened the scoring on the stroke of half time when Nikita Parris found the bottom corner with a clinical finish.

England doubled their advantage on the hour mark when Jill Scott, who would go on to play regularly at the Poundland Bescot Stadium for Aston Villa during a loan spell in 2022, headed home Beth Mead's cross.

It was the perfect preparation for the World Cup that saw Phil Neville's side reach the semi-finals, losing to USA.

England team: Bardsley; Daly, Williamson, Bright, Stokes; Parris (Carney, 60), Moore, Scott (c), Stanway (Kirby, 60), Mead (Staniforth, 80); White

Subs not used: Earps (gk), Bronze, Greenwood, Walsh, Houghton, Taylor, McManus

England Men's U19s 3-1 Republic of Ireland Men's U19s - March 2022

England Under 19s were also at the Poundland Bescot Stadium just 12 months ago as they kicked off their UEFA U19 EURO elite qualifying round campaign with a victory.

Dane Scarlett opened the scoring after five minutes but Ireland levelled the match on 38 minutes through James Abankwah.

Parity didn't last long as Carney Chukwuemeka restored England's lead just four minutes later.

Two minutes into the second half, the midifielder netted his second of the match to put England in a commanding position and they saw out the game comfortably.
