Songo'o: Saddlers can return to form

3 March 2023

Yann Songo’o is confident the Saddlers’ form at the Poundland Bescot Stadium can propel them through a tough test with Barrow.

Songo’o has made three league appearances since joining Walsall on loan from Bradford City in the January transfer window and is sure the team is now improving after an influx of new players.

“We know this team is solid at the back,” he said.

“What happened last week is really a one-off thing that cannot happen again.

“I think the team is now gelling after new players have come in, we saw that last week, and hopefully, we can build on that tomorrow and get the win and a few goals.

“We have been strong at home, so we are quite confident about it.”

Ahead of a tight schedule of games in March, Songo’o hopes the team’s home form can be a springboard into a strong spell but is under no illusions that Barrow won’t put up a fight.

“Every game is going to be tough in this league; Barrow are a really strong team, who have been doing well this season,” he said.

“But obviously, we have to focus on ourselves, how we can improve and be better. That's the priority, focus on ourselves, not the opponents and then it’s all about getting three points.”

The midfielder started in last week's 3-3 draw with Hartlepool and insisted the performance garnered many positives to be taken into the weekend.

“Last week was not all negative; there were a lot of positives to take from that game,” he stated.

“Since I have been here, we have been struggling a little bit in front of goal, and last Saturday, we didn't have that; we managed to score three goals.”

The Cameroonian has settled into life at the Poundland Bescot Stadium since arriving in January, and he asserted that the atmosphere at the club under Michael Flynn’s management is only going to take the club in one direction.

“The atmosphere here, it definitely feels like a family,” he said.

“Everyone is going in the same direction, everyone has the same objective, and I’ve really been enjoying the environment here; everyone looks after each other.

“Since I have come in, the coaches have been fantastic with me; working with them, even in the first month, I have learned many new things about improving myself and my football.

“The way they treat us as a team is unbelievable, so I’m really pleased to be working under them.”
