Michael Flynn calls for more belief

15 March 2023

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn has called on his players to have more belief following their goalless draw with Swindon Town on Tuesday night.

The Saddlers put in an improved performance compared to last Saturday’s defeat at Stevenage but were unable to find a breakthrough in a close fought affair at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Flynn insists the team are working hard to improve but he wants to see them have more confidence in themselves.

“The boys have just got to have that belief,” he said.

“You can see with turning down the opportunities to shoot, taking that extra touch – you haven’t got that time in the game, you’ve got to shift it out your feet and let loose.

“I’d rather shoot and it go over the bar than turn down the opportunity and never know. It’s something that everyone’s well aware of and something we’re trying our hardest with.

“We have got to take the chances, we’re not creating too much but when they are coming, we’re missing good ones.”

There were some positives to take from last night’s stalemate for the Saddlers Head Coach. Joe Riley got 90 minutes under his belt for the first time following his recent return from a long-term injury absence.

Flynn has had to be patient in phasing the 26-year-old back in but he was pleased with his display.

“It was a good full debut from him,” Flynn commented.

“He’s been out such a long time; I can’t just throw him in at the deep end because he risks injury again. It might not be the same thing he injures, it’ll be a muscle injury so we’ve had to work him hard when we can, get the mileage into him but (last night) almost forced our hand but we decided to go with him and he’s done reasonably well.

“It was almost like you wanted Hayden (White) right-back and Joe in midfield with that bit of creativity but it’s where we’re at. We’ve got players coming back, there’s players out injured still and unfortunately, it’s the cards we’re dealt and it’s a frustrating time but we’ll stick together and the boys are giving everything.”
