Match Report: Walsall 0-0 Bradford City

7 March 2023

Walsall were held to a goalless draw against high-flying Bradford City at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

The visitors came the closest to scoring in a game of few clear cut chances when Andy Cook’s header rattled the crossbar but neither team did enough to merit three points on the night.

Michael Flynn made four changes to the team that lost to Barrow at the weekend.

Liam Gordon, Conor Wilkinson, Andy Williams and Jacob Maddox all came into the side in place of Taylor Allen, Matty Stevens, Liam Kinsella and Oisin McEntee.

There was little to report in the opening 20 minutes but the first chance of the game fell to the Bantams through Cook who came agonisingly close when his looping header crashed against the crossbar.

Walsall’s first opportunity came on the half hour mark when Tom Knowles neatly found Wilkinson who arrowed in a shot but Harry Lewis pushed it behind.

The Saddlers grew into the game and finished the half strongly. Lewis was tested again on 44 minutes when Isaac Hutchinson let fly with a low drive from distance.

Walsall saw plenty of the ball in the second half and looked the more likely of the two sides but Bradford were proving to be a tough nut to crack.

Flynn brought on some fresh legs with 15 minutes to go as he introduced Kinsella who replaced Maddox.

Douglas James-Taylor also entered the fray three minutes later as Flynn freshened up the attack.

He almost had an immediate impact but he couldn’t quite make contact with the ball from Knowles’ teasing cross.

Walsall continued to push but Bradford made good strides forward in the closing stages and had a good opportunity when they were awarded a free-kick 20 yards out. Scott Banks stepped up but he fired his effort over the bar.

It was a much improved display from the Saddlers from the weekend defeat to Barrow but in the end, both teams had to settle for a point.
