Match Report: Grimsby Town 1-1 Walsall

25 March 2023

The Saddlers came from behind to earn a point on the road against Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.

Head Coach Michael Flynn made one change to the side that secured victory against Gillingham last Saturday at the Poundland Bescot Stadium. Conor Wilkinson, fresh off his first goal in almost a year, came into the starting XI in place of Andy Williams who was named amongst the substitutes.

The hosts started the brighter of the two sides and had a couple of opportunities to open the scoring early doors. George Floyd had an effort that was blocked inside the area on 3 minutes and from the resulting corner Niall Maher got a flick on it at the near post but it evaded everyone and went out of play.

The hosts continued to ask questions of the Saddlers defence in the opening exchanges but Flynn’s side were able to deal with the early pressure. Their first opportunity of the afternoon came on 17 minutes as Liam Kinsella did well to win back possession and Tom Knowles fed the ball through to Wilkinson who took aim just outside the box but he dragged his effort wide of the mark.

Moments later however, Grimsby took the lead. A corner into the box found its way to former Saddler Brynn Morris who curled his effort into the back of the net on the edge of the box to give his side the advantage.

The remainder of the half saw both sides test each other in different ways but both sides cancelled each other out and Paul Hurst’s side went into the break in the lead.

Flynn made two changes at the break as Jacob Maddox and Brandon Comley were replaced by Williams and Hayden White who returned from suspension.

Within five minutes of the restart, the Saddlers were back on level terms. Joe Riley’s corner caused chaos in the Grimsby box and skipper Donervon Daniels was on hand to pick up the pieces as he struck home off the underside of the bar, much to the joy of the 417 Saddlers fans who made the trip to Blundell Park.

Grimsby responded well and on 57 minutes John McAtee rued a glorious chance. The ball fell kindly to the hosts’ number 10 and he struck towards goal fiercely on the volley and it sailed just over the bar.

On 63 minutes, Daniels almost grabbed a second goal as from a corner, Williams' blocked shot found its way to the Saddlers captain but his effort could only find the side-netting.

As the second half progressed, Grimsby were made to rue further opportunities. McAtee headed towards goal following a cross by Danny Amos on 65 minutes but missed the target ever so slightly and on 83 minutes a similar exchange of play occurred, with Michee Efete also unable to find the target from his header at the back-post.

Flynn bought Matt Stevens into the action on 85 minutes in place of Wilkinson and in the end both sides had to settle for a point.
