Gordon proud after achievements on international duty

31 March 2023

Walsall defender Liam Gordon enjoyed his time away on international duty with Guyana.

The 23-year-old scored in a 2-0 victory over Bermuda and helped them keep a clean sheet in a goalless draw against Montserrat during a successful week that saw Guyana progress to the preliminary qualifying stage for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Gordon was impressed with the standard of football he encountered and was proud to get on the scoresheet.

“It’s always an honour representing my country,” he said.

“I think at any level it would be but to top it off with my first goal for my country was a proud moment, more so for my family who are from there. I can’t describe the feelings that I went through after that.

“I would have liked to have won the second game, we played against Montserrat but a goal, a win and two clean sheets, we went out there to qualify for the Gold Cup prelims and we achieved that so I think it was a positive experience.

“The standard is very good, I was impressed with a lot of the boys because sometimes I’ve been there and the standard hasn’t been what I expected but everyone was on it, we knew we had a job and everyone was switched on and the standard was unbelievable.”

Gordon is back in Walsall and focused on a return to Sky Bet League Two action tomorrow as the Saddlers take on Sutton United.

The defender is expecting a physical contest against a familiar opponent for him.

“I’ve played against Sutton plenty of times, especially when they were in the National League as well,” he explained.

“They’re a physical side, they play a lot of long ball but a lot of teams do in this division as well.

“They are a very physical side, we’ve come up against physical sides but I feel it’s different being at home. They are the 12th man, as they are away, it’s just even more at home you feel the crowd so hopefully we can use that to our advantage tomorrow and get the three points.”
