Daniels eager to get back on the pitch

6 March 2023

Walsall captain Donervon Daniels is eager to get back on the pitch and has stressed the importance of every game between now and the end of the season.

The Saddlers host Bradford City this evening and will be looking to return to winning ways and respond to Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Barrow.

Daniels feels every match will be like a cup final for the team and while there has been little time between the Barrow setback and tonight’s contest, it does present the team with an opportunity to put things right quickly.

“A Tuesday game can be a gift and a curse,” Daniels explained.

“You have to recover well to be able to go into the game fresh and to be able to compete but if you are coming off the back of a loss like we are, it gives you the opportunity to go into that game to right the wrongs that happened on Saturday so we are going to see it as a positive.

“We are champing at the bit to go again against really good opposition.

"At this point, every game is an important game and we have said in our pre-match meetings, every game is our cup final because we know where we want to go and what we want to achieve.

"We are the only ones who can change the results on the pitch. Yes, referees have an impact and our supporters have an impact in how we feel in the game when they push us on, drag us over the line and encourage us but once we step over that white line, us as players and a team are the only ones who can change it.”

The Saddlers have been on a frustrating run of nine league games without a win, which included a sequence of six consecutive draws.

The 29-year-old has called on the team to show what they’re capable of and put a difficult run of results behind them.

“The last six weeks haven’t been the results we all wanted or felt like we deserved, there has been a lot of draws in there,” he said.

“To lose (on Saturday) probably makes it feel a lot worse, a compounding effect of negativity but within the group and within the dressing room and the staff, we know how good we are and how good we can be and we just have to go out there and show it because we are the only ones who can change this lull or change this run of performances without a win.

“It is never nice to lose at home so we just want to bounce back again (tonight) and give the fans something to cheer about.”
