Chris Hussey joins the Saddlers!

22 June 2023

Walsall Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of defender Chris Hussey on an initial one-year contract.

The 34-year-old will officially join on July 1st upon the expiry of his contract at Stockport County.

The defender joins with a wealth of experience and a number of promotions on his CV.

Hussey began his career at AFC Wimbledon and played a key role in their promotion winning campaigns in 2008 and 2009.

He left Wimbledon in October 2009 and joined Championship club Coventry City, initially on loan before making the move permanent in January 2010. He went on to play 65 times for the Sky Blues before making a return to AFC Wimbledon, who had progressed into League Two, in 2013 and helped them preserve their league status.

A spell at Burton Albion followed before he made the switch to Bury and in 2015, he was part of the team that finished third in League Two and secured promotion to the third tier.

In the summer of 2016, Hussey joined Sheffield United where he enjoyed another promotion winning campaign as the Blades won League One.

After spending the 2017/18 season on loan at Swindon Town, Hussey joined Cheltenham Town where he played 155 times over a four-year period.

After missing out on promotion in his second season in Gloucestershire, Hussey made 43 appearances, contributing five assists as the Robins won League Two in the 2020/21 season and he gained yet another promotion.

A short stint at Port Vale followed in 2022 before he made the switch to fellow League Two side Stockport County where he played a pivotal role in helping the Hatters reach last season’s play-off final.

Hussey is eyeing more success as he prepares for his latest challenge at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

“I’m delighted to join Walsall,” he said.

“I like to get forward, get crosses in, defend well and give it my all – which I do every day. Every day is a work day, you’re a by-product of what you do in the week and if you work hard in the week, you get your rewards on a Saturday.

“Mat Sadler wants good people in the building and I was genuinely on board with that because if you have good people around you, obviously you need good players, but first and foremost, the emphasis is on getting good people in the building which I think is massive.

“I’m hoping for a good, successful season and everyone is pulling in the same direction.

“I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Head Coach Mat Sadler feels the defender is a key addition to the squad.

“I’m chuffed to bring Chris in,” he said.

“He is somebody with a high pedigree in this division and the one above. He has a lovely left foot, will compliment what we’ve got in the defensive areas really well and has fantastic set piece delivery.

“He’s the right type of person, the right type of character and he wants to get further promotions in his career.

“It’s also worth highlighting what he brings amongst all of that – he brings balance to the team, he’s a good person to have around the place because he’s demanding of himself and demanding of others which is something that we’ll need in the squad and he’ll form a key part of the group.”

The transfer is subject to EFL clearance.
