Ross Tierney joins the Saddlers on loan from Motherwell

24 July 2023

Walsall Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of midfielder Ross Tierney on a season-long loan from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell.

The 22-year-old began his professional career in the League of Ireland with Bohemians.

He made his debut for the Bohs at the age of 18 and found the net on his first appearance in a League of Ireland Cup victory over Cork City.

Tierney began to cement his place in Bohemians’ first team but really made a name for himself in the 2021 season as he scored nine goals in all competitions and played six times in the UEFA Europa Conference League, scoring against Stjarnan and F91 Dudelange.

The midfielder’s impressive performances caught the eye of Motherwell and he signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Scottish outfit on January 1st 2022.

Tierney has scored four times so far for Motherwell, including strikes against Celtic and Rangers.

He also has nine Republic of Ireland Under 21s caps to his name and scored with practically his first touch on his international debut against Australia in June 2021.

At the age of 22, Tierney has amassed over 100 professional club appearances and the talented midfielder is now looking forward on embarking on his new challenge in the EFL with the Saddlers.

“I’m really happy to join Walsall,” he said.

“I’m still only 22, but I’ve played a lot of games at senior levels so once the gaffer said he wanted me, I was happy to come.

“I know Oisin (McEntee) and I spoke to Conor Wilkinson at Motherwell as well and everything they’ve both said about the club made me excited to come down.

“I’m an energetic, attacking midfielder and I like to link up with the strikers so hopefully I can pitch in with some assists and goals.

“I want to play games, kick on here at Walsall and have a good season.”

Head Coach Mat Sadler feels Tierney is another strong addition to the team.

“Ross comes into the building and will bring some really good competition in that midfield area,” said Sadler.

“He’s had a fantastic first initial spell of his career and now it’s about going again. He’s been desperate to come down to England and show what he’s all about so we feel very fortunate to have him here.

“He’s scored goals against Celtic, he’s scored goals against Rangers so he’s got an attacking pedigree.

“He provides a bit of a different option to what we currently have and I’m especially looking forward to work with him because of his high energy, work rate and he wants to make defenders defend. He’s got a lovely ability to find a pass in the final third so I’m really pleased to have him here."

The transfer is subject to international clearance.
