Match Report: Leamington 1-4 Walsall

11 July 2023

The Saddlers kicked off their preseason with a comprehensive win over Southern League Premier side Leamington.

First half goals from Danny Johnson and a brace from Douglas James-Taylor were added to in the second half by Isaac Hutchinson as Mat Sadler’s side walked away with a 1-4 win.

It took Johnson just 28 seconds to pick up where he left off for the Saddlers as smart work from James-Taylor saw him cut it back to his fellow forward who had the simple task of turning it past Leamington goalkeeper Callum Smith from close range.

Shortly after the half an hour mark, James-Taylor netted his first of the evening at the Your Co-Op Community Stadium.

After great work from Tom Knowles to win the ball back just inside the 18-yard box, the wing-back composed himself to pull the ball back to James-Taylor on the penalty spot and the striker simply stroked the ball into the back of the net.

Five minutes before the break and James-Taylor added his second and Walsall’s third of the evening.

Yet more great work from Knowles saw him break down the right before delivering a wicked cross into the box and James-Taylor had the simple task of flicking home from close range.

Just before the half-time break, the home side found the back of the net themselves as a low shot from just outside the penalty area evaded everyone and Callum Stewart ghosted in at the back post to tap in on the line.

Three minutes into the second half and Walsall added their fourth goal of the evening after the Head Coach had made 10 changes at the break.

A cross from Joe Riley was partially cleared to the edge of the box and into the path of Hutchinson whose perfectly timed strike found the bottom corner.

The Saddlers continued to go in search of a fifth goal and nearly got it from a corner just after the half mark. A brilliant delivery from Trialist C was met by Trialist D but his header was just wide of the target.

There were late chances for Walsall as Jamille Matt and Riley both went close but were unable to convert their chances in front of goal and that was the last of the action as Mat Sadler's side began their preseason programme with a victory.

First half team: Evans; Knowles, Farquharson, Daniels, Hussey, Gordon; McEntee, Stirk, Maher; Johnson, James-Taylor.

Second half team: Trialist A; Foulkes, Trialist D, Trialist B, Hussey (Owen, 55), Allen; Riley, Hutchinson, Trialist C; Matt, Onabirekhanlen.
