Mat Sadler keen to see as many supporters as possible for Wayne Evans memorial game

21 July 2023

The Saddlers are back in action this evening as we welcome National League side Rochdale to the Poundland Bescot Stadium in what is more than the average preseason friendly.

Both sides will be paying tribute to former player Wayne Evans who sadly passed away aged 51 earlier this month and proceeds after costs will be going to the Wayne Evans memorial fund.

Whilst Head Coach Mat Sadler wants to take all of the usual things out of the game tonight, he was also keen to highlight the work that had gone in behind the scenes to make the game happen in memory of Wayne.

“The one on Friday against Rochdale is one Dan Mole picked up straight away as soon as the news came across about what had happened,” said the Head Coach.

“Dan mobilised the troops to make this happen so I think it’s right that he, alongside other people at the Football Club as well because it’s very much a team effort, but I want to make sure Dan gets the credit for what he’s done there because he’s really gone to town to make that game happen.

“I urge as many people as possible to come down for the family because for me, there’s nothing quite as powerful in my opinion than when everyone at this Football Club is together with it so it’s a great opportunity for us all to get together and pay respects to a fantastic servant to the Football Club.

“I know it’s Friday night and money is money and sometimes it is hard but it would be absolutely brilliant to get as many down as we could.”
