Joe Foulkes determined to fight for his place

27 July 2023

Walsall defender Joe Foulkes is determined to fight for his place and has enjoyed being back at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

The 20-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at Kidderminster Harriers, where he enjoyed a promotion winning campaign in 2022/23.

Foulkes, fresh from signing a new contract back in June, played 90 minutes in Tuesday’s behind closed doors friendly against West Bromwich Albion Under 21s and has been heavily involved in pre-season so far.

He is looking forward to the real action starting on August 5th and he is aiming to cement his place in the first team.

“It’s about getting league games under my belt,” Foulkes said.

“I’m sure I’ll have great competition with Tom Knowles to try and earn that spot so I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s always a long pre-season and you think back to the start, it’s a six-week programme but everyone is really excited to get the season started.

“It’s a great group and hopefully we’ll get things ticking.”

Foulkes has slotted back into the group well and has enjoyed learning off experienced EFL professionals.

He feels there is a good mix in the squad and feels the team have come together nicely.

“I’ve moulded with the lads really well,” he commented.

“Some of the lads have taken me under their wing a little bit being a bit of a younger lad having not been at Walsall for the last couple of years.

“Personally, going to players like Donervon Daniels and asking him for advice and he’s always willing to help me so having that experience in there along with the youth side of it is really good.

“There’s never a dull moment in training. It’s a great group and I’m having a good time so far.”
