Head Coach pleased with outing against Leamington

12 July 2023

Saddlers Head Coach Mat Sadler was pleased to see everyone make it through Tuesday night’s game against Leamington and was satisfied with what the group got out of their first preseason game of 2023.

It was a comprehensive win on the night for Walsall as goals from Danny Johnson, Isaac Hutchinson and a brace from Douglas James-Taylor secured a 4-1 victory at the Your Co-Op Community Stadium.

But Sadler was more focused on what the group took from their first outing than the final result of the game.

“I said it before the game, it’s that first taste of playing under the lights as it was tonight,” Sadler began.

“The lads have done a lot of work building up to the first game, the first friendly, and I think that you could see that there was a real enjoyment from them being part of a real competitive game.

“Credit to them in how they applied themselves, credit to them in the way they took on the stuff we had asked them to take on.

“It was a worthwhile run out, everyone is okay and that is the main thing for me, everyone has come through it okay and in good shape so I am pleased.”

Amongst those involved in the game against the Brakes was 16-year-old Tom Owen who has caught the eye of the Head Coach so far this preseason.

“Tom has been training with us a fair bit as has Dylan Thomas, they are fresh out of school those boys, they are first year scholars,” Sadler continued.

“They suitably impressed me in some of the games towards the end of last season and that is how I will keep doing it.

“Ronan Maher started the game tonight and I thought he did really well, he applied himself well.

“We are fortunate that there are a good few kids in the group who have played tonight and will continue to play and form a part of things hopefully for the next four or five years. I thought Marvellous did well as well.

“These kids will only get opportunities if I think they deserve them and these have deserved them. What you have here with me is that I won’t ever be afraid to play players that deserve to play.”
