Walsall Women 1-4 Lichfield City Ladies Reserves

Walsall Women suffered back-to-back defeats after they were put to the sword by a clinical Lichfield City Reserves side.

Following a 4-0 reverse to league leaders Shifnal Town in their previous game, the Saddlers were looking to respond and started the game on the front foot with Jasmin Springer forcing a save from Lichfield goalkeeper Morgan Underwood in the first minute with a shot from distance.

After a bright start from Walsall, Lichfield played their way back into the game and forced Walsall keeper Olivia Wells into her first save on fifteen minutes with a close range shot from Scarlett Fielding.

Walsall’s next chance came on 27 minutes when Shannon Workman went close with a header from a corner that just flew wide of the target.

Springer had Walsall’s next chance when her shot went over the bar following a mistake by Underwood.

Despite good pressure from the Saddlers, it was Lichfield who opened the scoring on 34 minutes when Amelia Lightfoot capitalised on poor defending from Walsall to fire home.

The hosts reacted and almost equalised when Heather Clayton’s header was cleared off the line on 42 minutes.

Moments later, Lichfield extended their lead when Corinna Williams turned past her defender and scored with a low shot just inside the post.

Lichfield added a third early in the second half with a penalty from Chantal Ahmed and effectively put the game beyond Walsall’s reach.

Lichfield put the icing on the cake in the 84th minute as Lightfoot scored her second of the game as she worked her way down the left-hand side and cut into the box and shot past Wells into the far corner.

Walsall did eventually get on the scoresheet on 87 minutes when Aaliyah Shearer scored with a well taken shot following Workman’s through ball but it was nothing more than a consolation and the Saddlers were left disappointed.

Walsall will look to bounce back in their next game away at AFC Telford United on Sunday 5th February.
