Flynn looking to improve on previous performances against Stockport

6 January 2023

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn is looking for an improved performance from previous displays against Stockport County when his team meet them for the third time this season in the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The Saddlers drew at Edgeley Park back in October and suffered a 2-0 defeat at the Poundland Bescot Stadium eight days ago.

Flynn is keen to right the wrongs from previous encounters with the Hatters and hopes his side can produce a good performance.

“We haven’t turned up in the last two times that we have played them,” he said.

“They are a very good team. They have good players, a good manager, they’re a club on the up and they’re doing things the right way.

“We have got to go there full of confidence, we know we can do better against them and hopefully on Sunday that is exactly what we do.

“We might tweak one or two things and they might tweak one or two things as well.

“Obviously, we can’t affect what they do but we are always looking at how we can improve and at the things that we can do better this time round against Stockport and we have done that in our meetings and debriefs so far this week.

“Hopefully it is a good game and it’s Walsall that are in the hat for the next round.”

Flynn has added to his squad this week with the signings of midfielder Robbie Willmott and defender Joe Low.

He was also boosted by Oisin McEntee’s man of the match display on his full debut against Mansfield Town on New Year’s Day and the Saddlers Head Coach is pleased with the options he has at the back.

“It was good for Oisin but with us predominantly playing three at the back, Hayden has had one or two little niggles and with it being Oisin’s first game, it would be silly for us to just leave ourselves short in that department so in the window, Joe has come up, he is a player I like,” Flynn explained.

“I have got a good relationship with Bristol City and hopefully it is a good signing for us and Joe goes on to show us how good he is

“He has settled straight in with the group. He is a big, strong lad, he is very good technically and he is aggressive. He adds good competition into what is already a very solid defence.”
