Memorable Matches: Northampton 0-1 Walsall - 2019

3 February 2023

As the Saddlers prepare to take on Northampton Town at Sixfields, we take a look back at a memorable encounter from August 2019.

It was the opening day of the 2019/20 season. The Saddlers had just been relegated to Sky Bet League Two but there was fresh optimism with six new faces in the starting XI (12 in the 18-man squad) and a new manager at the helm in Darrell Clarke.

Well over 1000 fans made the short trip to a sunny Northampton and the atmosphere was electric in the away end throughout the entire afternoon.

That noise certainly ramped up after 13 minutes when Danny Guthrie’s out swinging corner was met by the head of new skipper James Clarke whose looping header dropped into the net via the crossbar to give the Saddlers the lead and cause bedlam in the away end.

Northampton responded well and Walsall were given an early season test of their metal.

Sam Hoskins and Charlie Goode both came close with shots from close range but they found Liam Roberts in fine form as he got in the way of both.

The Saddlers regrouped again in the second half and had a couple of opportunities but the Cobblers began to pile on the pressure to try and get an equaliser.

Hoskins and Joe Martin couldn’t find the target with their efforts but Northampton looked to be getting closer.

Goode looked like he levelled when a corner was nodded back across goal and he directed a header goalwards but was denied by a sensational save by Roberts who flew across and got a brilliant hand to parry it away and the Saddlers held on to claim all three points.

Tomorrow’s match will be the 89th meeting between the two teams.

Northampton have won 33 of them while the Saddlers have won 37.

Tickets have now gone off sale from the Poundland Bescot Stadium but there are tickets available on the day at Northampton, subject to availability.

Pleas note, there is a £2 price increase on the day.
