Memorable Matches - Walsall v Leyton Orient

9 February 2023

Ahead of tomorrow's meeting, we take a look back at three memorable meetings between the Saddlers and Leyton Orient at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Walsall 1-0 Leyton Orient – August 2011

It was the opening day of the 2011/12 season as the Saddlers hosted Orient with Dean Smith, who had a six-year spell as a player at Brisbane Road, embarking on his first full season in charge at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

The hosts lined up with new signings Mat Sadler, Claude Gnakpa, Kevan Hurst and Adam Chambers, who had signed from the O’s that summer, in the starting XI.

Walsall started well and controlled the first half which saw Gnakpa, Will Grigg and Jon Macken all go close.

The Saddlers took the lead on 21 minutes and Chambers came back to haunt the club who released him that summer with a terrific 30-yard piledriver.

Orient responded and Ben Chorley had a good opportunity for the visitors but his header drifted just wide of the mark.

The Londoners continued to press for an equaliser and Jimmy Walker was in fine form to twice deny Jimmy Smith.

Walsall stood strong late on and started the 2011/12 season with a win and a clean sheet.

Walsall 1-0 Leyton Orient – January 2020

Walsall were looking to start 2020 off on a positive note in their New Year's Day meeting with Orient.

Darrell Clarke’s side saw their six-match unbeaten league run ended three days earlier against Carlisle United and were aiming to bounce back.

The hosts started well with Josh Gordon and Mat Sadler coming close with headed chances.

Walsall made the breakthrough two minutes before half time when Gordon raced through, latching on to Liam Roberts’ clearance and rounded Sam Sargeant before applying the finish.

It was his seventh goal of that campaign in which he would finish with 12.

Things were going well for the Saddlers but they suffered a setback on 66 minutes when Cameron Pring was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.

Orient put Walsall under pressure and it was a nervy finish but Clarke’s team held on to claim three points to start 2020 off with a victory and a clean sheet.

Walsall 2-1 Leyton Orient – October 2020

Walsall’s last victory over Orient came in October 2020 at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

The hosts started the game on the front foot but fell behind after 15 minutes when Liam Kinsella’s poor back pass was pounced upon by Danny Johnson who then had the simple task of rolling the ball into the empty net.

The Saddlers responded well and levelled 10 minutes later when Caolan Lavery’s smart through ball on the turn found Rory Holden who placed the ball into the bottom corner.

Walsall had the chance to take the lead moments later when Holden was tripped in the box. Lavery stepped up to take the penalty but his effort was saved by Lawrence Vigouroux.

The Saddlers eventually got their second goal on 61 minutes when Wes McDonald’s shot was blocked but the ball fell into the path of Elijah Adebayo who curled the ball into the far corner.

Walsall almost added a third when George Nurse cut the ball back to Holden who let fly with a fierce strike that cannoned off the post.

The Saddlers saw out the remaining minutes to stretch their unbeaten start to the 2020/21 season to five games.
