Match Report: Walsall 1-1 Newport County

18 February 2023

Walsall recorded their fourth consecutive draw as they were held by Newport County at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Isaac Hutchinson gave the hosts the lead with a thunderbolt in the first half but former Saddler Cameron Norman levelled with 12 minutes to go to earn the Exiles a share of the spoils.

Michael Flynn made one change to the team that drew 0-0 with Colchester United as Matty Stevens came in for Jacob Maddox who was missing from the squad.

There was positive news on the bench as Joe Riley was fit enough for a place amongst the substitutes.

Walsall had a couple of early openings via two free-kicks both delivered by Tom Knowles. The first was met by Stevens who headed wide while the second saw Joe Low poke the ball goalwards but his effort was saved by Nick Townsend.

The Saddlers opened the scoring on 31 minutes when the ball was played into Jamille Matt, who tried to play it back as he was hauled down but the ball fell to Hutchinson who rifled in a pile-driver that flew into the back of the net.

Walsall enjoyed the majority of the possession in the first half and were good value for their lead at the interval.

Newport made four substitutions at half time to try and swing the pendulum their way but there was little action to report in the early stages of the second half.

Flynn made a double change on 67 minutes as he introduced Douglas James-Taylor and Riley for his Walsall debut in place of Liam Gordon and Stevens.

Newport grew into the game and equalised on 78 minutes when Norman met a corner at the back post and his header found the bottom corner.

The game became a real scrap and a battle as it headed into the closing stages.

Knowles came close for Walsall from a free-kick in stoppage time but his effort was pushed away by Townsend.

That proved to be the last of the action and both teams had to settle for a point.
