Match Report: Northampton Town 0-0 Walsall

4 February 2023

The Saddlers secured a point on the road following a stalemate at Sixfields against Northampton Town.

Michael Flynn made three changes to the side which suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Salford City on Tuesday at the Peninsula Stadium. Brandon Comley, Isaac Hutchinson and deadline day signing Matty Stevens came into the starting XI whilst Conor Wilkinson, Joe Low and Yann Songo’o were named amongst the substitutes.

There was little to report on in the first half at Sixfields as both sides struggled to find their rhythm.

Sam Hoskins had an opportunity in the early stages for the Cobblers. On 4 minutes, Ali Koiki’s cross found the forward and he tried his luck with a low strike on the turn but his effort did little to trouble Owen Evans as it went wide of the mark.

On 15 minutes, Mitch Pinnock had the first meaningful attempt on goal as he picked the ball up in space before sizing up an effort from distance and Evans was on hand to parry away for a corner which in turn came to nothing.

Both sides huffed and puffed as the half progressed but the resilience and structure of the defensive lines proved to be the ultimate factor in a half of limited chances.

The final effort of note in the half came on 36 minutes where Pinnock’s cross found Hoskins at the far post, but he blazed his effort over the bar and both sides went into the break on level terms.

The Saddlers started brightly after the interval and created some opportunities. Hutchinson picked up the ball in space after a good passage of play and he turned and drilled a shot towards goal but it did nothing to faze Tom King in the Cobblers net and it trickled wide.

Shortly after and an opportunity for Tom Knowles went begging. Koiki’s header back towards King didn’t go to plan and the Saddlers man was on hand to retrieve the ball and try and test the Cobblers keeper but his effort swerved away from the goal and out of play.

Moments later, Jamille Matt did excellently down the right-hand side and delivered a low ball into the box where Stevens was on hand to try and get a debut goal but King read the danger well and collected the shot with ease.

As we approached the hour mark, Flynn turned to his bench and introduced Wilkinson to the action in place of Matt. Flynn then made a further two changes on 76 minutes as Hutchinson and Stevens made way for Andy Williams and Willmott in a bid to break the deadlock.

As the game reached its conclusion Northampton had their final opportunity on 89 minutes as the ball found its way through the Saddlers backline but Evans was alert and on hand to block the resulting shot and preserve his clean sheet.

Shortly after and the Cobblers were reduced to ten men as Koiki picked up his second yellow card for a late challenge on Knowles in front of the dugouts.

The full-time whistle went moments later and in the end both sides had to settle for a point.
