Knowles enjoying wing-back role

7 February 2023

Auxiliary wing-back Tom Knowles has been enjoying his role in the team and is learning a lot from his fellow defenders.

The 24-year-old produced a determined display as he helped the Saddlers keep a clean sheet away at high flying Northampton Town.

Knowles has slotted in at wing-back since Liam Bennett was recalled by Cambridge United.

He feels he has adapted well to the position with the help of his more experienced defensive colleagues and he’s been happy to play there.

“I’ve really enjoyed it,” Knowles said.

“Like I said when I first came here, as long as I’m on the pitch, I’m happy.

“It’s natural to me because I like being out wide and getting at players and I’ve had to learn the defensive side as well but I’ve got DD (Donervon Daniels) and Hayden (White) talking to me all game so that’s really helped.

“It’s massive because it could be the sake of half a yard left or right and that could be the difference between them getting through and me intercepting it so it’s important that I listen to them and take on board everything they tell me because then I can learn more and I can really progress my game.

“Hopefully I can keep that up and keep in the team.”

Next up for Walsall is the visit of league leaders Leyton Orient who come to the Poundland Bescot Stadium on Saturday.

Michael Flynn’s men have a busy schedule of fixtures over the next six weeks, with a handful of midweek matches coming up as well.

With a rare free week ahead of Saturday’s encounter with the O’s, Knowles is keen to make the most of it and be in the best possible shape ahead of the weekend and beyond.

“That’s the key – rest and recover,” he stated.

“The games are coming thick and fast so we need to be able to be fast and intense in those games. We need to rest up now, have a good training week and look forward to the game on Saturday.”
