Jamille Matt confident in team's capabilities

3 February 2023

Walsall striker Jamille Matt has full confidence of the squad's capabilities as they prepare to take on high-flying Northampton Town tomorrow.

The Saddlers will be looking to get back to winning ways after Tuesday’s defeat to Salford City.

Matt made his Walsall debut against the Ammies and despite the defeat, he has no doubt about the team’s ability.

He’s confident heading into tomorrow’s contest but is under no illusions about the challenge that lies ahead.

“It will be a tough test,” Matt said.

“They were there or thereabouts last season and unlucky not to go up so I’m sure that will be motivation for them to try and put that right this season but we’re a team now and we’ve got a squad in there capable of challenging at the top end of the league so we’ll be going there full of confidence and looking to get a result ourselves.”

The 33-year-old was one of six new additions in the January transfer window. The sixth signing was striker Matty Stevens, who Matt played alongside for two years at Forest Green Rovers.

The duo bagged 47 goals between each other as Rovers won Sky Bet League Two and Matt is buzzing to be reunited with the 24-year-old.

“Matty’s a great lad first and foremost,” he commented.

“He works his socks off for the team but he’s a goal scorer as well. We had a really good partnership last season, scored a lot of goals and we worked really well together and struck up a really good partnership.

"I’m looking forward to rekindling that and hopefully we can do that in a Walsall shirt.”

Matt has been at the club for three weeks and it’s been a smooth transition for him since arriving in WS1.

“It’s been good,” he stated.

“It took a little bit longer than I anticipated to play my first game but the boys have been great, they’ve welcomed me in so I’m all settled in with the boys and everything at the training ground.”
