Flynn: Slow start cost the Saddlers

1 February 2023

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn admitted a slow start cost his side after Tuesday night’s defeat to Salford City.

The Saddlers suffered their first away defeat since mid-October on a frustrating night in the north west.

Flynn bemoaned his team’s poor decision making and was disappointed with how his team began the contest.

“You can’t come to places like Salford and start the way we did,” Flynn said.

“We conceded a poor goal and they were by far the better team in the first half an hour. After that, I thought we were the better team and should have scored at the end of the first half, I don’t know how it didn’t go in.

“Their keeper made three or four very good saves but our decision making was poor. In these conditions, you don’t have to complicate it, you just have to play the percentage game. We brought Jamille in, we put him up front and we hardly put a cross in the box.

“We didn’t help with our decision making so it’s frustrating but it might be a good kick up the backside for a few of them because we can’t start the way we did against a team trying to get into the play-offs or automatics, like us.”

Matt made his full debut for the Saddlers while Conor Wilkinson started for the first time since he suffered his knee injury back in April.

Flynn was pleased to see him come through and play a substantial portion of the game.

“It’s good to have him back,” he commented.

“I had to give him those minutes tonight because we need him up to speed. He came through and he looked like he was getting stronger as the game went on.”
