Flynn looking to take advantage of free week

6 February 2023

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn is looking to take advantage of a free week on the training field with a behind closed doors game against the Academy.

The Saddlers picked up a solid point away at automatic promotion hunting Northampton Town on Saturday and will be looking to get back to winning ways when they take on league leaders Leyton Orient at the Poundland Bescot Stadium this weekend.

Flynn plans to utilise the upcoming free week to get players up to sharpness with an in-house match and is looking forward to a solid week of work on the training pitch.

“It’s important because for the first time this season, and it goes to show with the injuries, we left four at home who were fit to be involved in the squad,” Flynn said.

“We’ll have a game on Tuesday for the boys who haven’t been playing much and try and get a few more up to speed.

“We’ll have a behind-closed-doors game between ourselves and the academy and they’ll be having a game so we can get minutes into their legs.”

The Saddlers have had a tough week with last weekend’s FA Cup clash against Leicester City, a midweek trip to Salford City and Saturday’s tricky encounter with the Cobblers.

Flynn felt it was a scrappy battle but was satisfied with the result his team came away with.

“I thought it was a good point as an away performance against a physical, direct Northampton,” he commented.

“It was a good point, the clean sheet was important after the last two games and we were the better team in the second half so as it goes, it was a good point but we just didn’t have that quality in the final third.

“It was that scruffy, the referee stopping the game left, right and centre, the game couldn’t get any flow and that was for both teams, not just us.

“We all got out of second gear, we just didn’t have that quality when it mattered because it was such a physical battle, especially in the middle of the park, it takes it out of you.

“We’ve had a really tough week, Leicester, Salford away and Northampton away and I’m looking forward to a tough game next Saturday against Leyton Orient.”
