Flynn fully focused on Newport task

17 February 2023

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn is fully focused on the task at hand as he prepares to face his former team Newport County tomorrow afternoon.

The Saddlers will be looking to build on recent draws as they play their first of two home games in three days.

Flynn is expecting a difficult encounter against Graham Coughlan’s side and while Newport is a club that remains close to his heart, there will be no room for sentiment during the 90 minutes.

“Everybody knows it’s my hometown club, it’s a club I love,” Flynn said.

“I’ve got special memories of being the manager there and I wish Newport every success going forward, except for against the team I’m managing.

“It does feel a bit weird but tomorrow, I’m only concerned on Walsall winning the football match.

“Graham’s come in, I get on well with Graham and Joe Dunne. They’ve steadied the ship, got them organised, got them fit and it’s going to be a tough afternoon.”

The Saddlers have drawn their last three matches and will be aiming to get back to winning ways.

Flynn is expecting all teams to be fighting tooth and nail for points as we enter the final third of the season and is looking rebuild some momentum.

“We need to put a run together but I won’t be thinking because we’re at home that we’re going to have the three points, no one is going to roll over and give them to us,” he commented.

“The players have got to be fully focused, fully committed, same work ethic and more because teams are fighting for their lives now whether they’re top or bottom of the table.

“We’ve got to match or better that; we’ve got our own aspirations and we’ve got to keep professional and keep doing what has got us success when it has come.”

The Walsall Head Coach is also hoping to welcome back some injured players for a busy run of fixtures with Joe Riley expected to be involved in some capacity tomorrow.

“Joe will be involved tomorrow, whether he starts or is on the bench is for me to think on tonight,” he confirmed.

“Liam (Kinsella) is very close. They will be two good additions for us because we have missed Joe this season.”
