Sadler hails his team after positive week

18 December 2023

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler has hailed the way his team after they came through three different tests with three victories.

Jamille Matt’s second goal in as many matches was enough to see off Tranmere Rovers on Saturday and capped off a morale boosting week for the Saddlers after wins over Notts County and Alfreton Town previously.

Sadler was pleased with how his team adapted to get the desired result in all three contests and felt his players got their just rewards.

“They’ve earned it through their hard work and we’ve had to do it in different ways in all of the three games which is also pleasing,” Sadler said.

“In the game against Notts County we had to show that resilience to come from behind but we also had to be really on it in terms of our out of possession stuff, there was loads of work going into the triggers in that game and we had to be on it.

“The game on Tuesday night, we had to be brilliant in both boxes but brilliant in our box in particular and defend that lead.

“On Saturday, we spoke about the way they were going to play, we knew they would drop into two banks of four and we knew that they were going to steal and counter.

“The pitch wasn’t great for us; it didn’t help us move it quickly and I think we got caught out a couple of times because of that but the resilience we showed to make sure we were going to keep a clean sheet was there and evident for everyone to see.

“I thought second half especially we were very good, very pleasing.”

Saturday’s match winner Matt was introduced in place of Isaac Hutchinson at half time but it was the only alteration Sadler made throughout.

The game was on a knife edge with just a goal in it in the closing stages but the Head Coach was confident that his team would get over the line and sensed the way the game was going suited Matt which prompted his introduction.

“I just felt like it was the game for Jamma as I stood there and watched,” he explained.

“I felt like the way that they set up, it wasn’t going to be one of them with the spaces they were offering us to go and play through them in the way that sometimes we do.

“They were stuck in their two banks of four moving from side to side really well, you can see they’re really well coached and well drilled but I felt like we were going to get some overloads in the wide areas or through our outside centre halves and in the end, it told, Donervon (Daniels) is the one who played the pass and it felt like a game to bring Jamille on.

“It also felt like a game not to upset it too much. As the referee was making up the amount of time that we’re playing at the end there, that was a farce. As he’s making up the time that we play you’re thinking do I change something? Do I bring a few fresh legs on? They’ve got five new bodies on the pitch but we were up to speed in the game and I felt it was very difficult to change anything.

“I felt we were all aligned in the way we were going to win the game so it was a proper team effort.

“We wish everyone a Merry Christmas going into the next game at home being Boxing Day and we’ve done it in a good way so fantastic week, a really positive one and onwards we go.”
