Pre-match: Gordon keen to build on recent clean sheets

22 December 2023

Walsall defender Liam Gordon is keen to build on recent clean sheets and use them as a platform going into Saturday’s trip to Accrington Stanley.

The Saddlers will be looking to stretch their unbeaten run to five and build on a run of three successive victories.

Mat Sadler’s men have conceded just once in their last four outings and Gordon has been boosted by the team’s defensive solidity and is determined maintain those high standards.

“Clean sheets go unnoticed a lot,” Gordon commented.

“You can win a game but still concede. Strikers might not feel it as much but as a defender that pains you because that’s your bread and butter.

“To build on the back of our clean sheets is massive, we’ve had three clean sheets in our last four games so it’s something to build on.

“It doesn’t matter about the opposition, it’s a clean sheet. You put your body on the line for 90 minutes and that’s what it takes to get a clean sheet and grind out games when they don’t suit us so it’s a massive confidence boost and I hope that we remain humble but solid as well and ready for the fight against Accrington.”

Tomorrow’s trip to Accrington kicks off the busy Christmas period.

Gordon is embracing the hectic schedule and while he admitted it is a challenging time for players, he insists the players will remain professional while enjoying the festivities.

“It’s tough,” he admitted.

“I was speaking to my friend the other day and I was saying that New Year is the hardest time for me, I’m not sure about the other boys.

“You can’t do anything and that’s the same for Christmas, you’ve got to watch what you eat, go on a run and in an ideal world you wouldn’t be doing that but we’ve got a game and we’ve got to remain professional.

"It’s mentally tough but I’m used to it now but it’s part and parcel of the job so you learn to embrace it.”
