Match Report: Notts County 1-2 Walsall

9 December 2023

The Saddlers completed a superb second half turnaround to secure all three points on the road against Notts County thanks to a brilliant brace from Oisin McEntee.

In a fairly uneventful and even first half in the pouring rain, both sides were limited to very few efforts on goal with the only one for the Saddlers coming from Tom Knowles.

The number 10 was quick to try and catch County keeper Aidan Stone out with a free-kick from distance but his effort from just inside the opposition half was inches wide of the far post.

It wasn’t until just after the half hour mark when County registered their first shot on target and subsequently opened the scoring.

A cross came in from the right from Jodi Jones and Baldwin got up highest to power his header down into the bottom corner past Jackson Smith.

Five minutes before half time and the home side went close to doubling their tally on the afternoon as Dan Crowley picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area but his low shot was well saved by Smith at his near post.

The Saddlers were back on level terms 11 minutes into the second half as Liam Gordon crossed to the back post where McEntee got up above his marker and powered his header past Stone into the bottom corner.

Just nine minutes later and the turnaround was complete for the Saddlers thanks to an outstanding controlled finish by McEntee.

After good work all round, Isaac Hutchinson cut the ball back to the edge of the box and McEntee arrived right on time to side foot the ball into the top corner on the half volley - much to the delight of the 1,059 travelling fans.

It was now the hosts who were looking for a way back into the game but they rarely tested the Saddlers backline as the team as a whole kept them at bay.

Sadler's side could have settled the contest on 86 minutes as a free-kick was floated into the box by Ryan Stirk and Captain Donervon Daniels was unmarked and able to guide his header towards goal, but his effort went straight into the palms of Stone.

County then piled on some late pressure but were unable to muster any opportunities as the Saddlers held out to claim a valuable three points at Meadow Lane.
